Local businesses sent more than 200 employees to work for the community at the 2010 Day of Caring, September 8. These employee volunteers lent their muscle to area organizations that need the extra manpower to complete a variety of special projects.
Day of Caring provided community members with a collective volunteer opportunity that demonstrates how United Way of Abilene brings people and resources together to improve lives; the event also provides a platform for the definitive start of the 2011 campaign.
“Day of Caring gives community investment a human face,” said Kim Thomas, United Way of Abilene board member and Day of Caring volunteer chair. “We mobilized this volunteer force so community members can influence long-term change and see the power of giving. No job was too small or too large to be proposed for the Day of Caring.”
Any 501(c)(3) was invited to submit a project for Day of Caring volunteers.
The event began with volunteer sign-in and breakfast at 7:30 a.m. Following a short program, volunteers started work at various projects throughout the community. After projects are completed at 3:00 p.m., volunteers reunited for a recap and celebration, scheduled to finish at approximately 3:45 p.m. All Day of Caring participants received a 2010 Day of Caring t-shirt.
